Colombo : About 40% of the population in Sri Lanka (eight million) is classified as the Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) folks earning less than two dollars a day. Of these poor, two thirds (64%) of 'BoP households' claim ownership of a phone (mobile or fixed - or both) which is twice the same rate in India (38%), according to a recent Teleuse survey.

Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday rejected claims of irregularities at the 300m MW Kerawalapitiya Combined Cycle-Gas Turbines and Steam Turbines Power Plant.

He was speaking after inspecting the plant.

The Ceylon Electricity Board, particularly its Engineers’ Union, has been criticizing the plant’s management saying that it was business-oriented and not sticking to its initial promises.

The expansion of the Universe is speeding up – proving once again that Einstein’s theory of relativity is correct - according to astronomers who studied hundreds of thousands of galaxies.

In the biggest survey ever conducted using the Hubble Space telescope, 446,000 galaxies were studied to see how matter was distributed throughout the universe and how quickly it had expanded.

And the astronomers found that the universe was growing faster and faster with time, as predicted by Einstein in his theory of general relativity.
