සොළොස්මස්ථාන වන්දනාවේ ගිය යුගයක් අපට තිබිණි. නාගදීපය, සේරුවාවිල, සෝමාවතිය, දීඝවාපිය ආදී පූජනීය වෙහෙර විහාර අපි මහත් ආශාවෙන් වන්දනා කළෙමු. එහෙත් මින් තිස් වසරකට පෙර ලොව අතිශයින් ම බිහිසුණු අමානුෂික ජාතිවාදී ත්‍රස්තවාදයකට අපි ගොදුරු වුනෙමු. එහි ප්‍රතිඵල විසින් අපට සියලු යහපත් දෑ අහිමි කරන ලදී. සාමය සමාදානය මෙන් ම සතුට ද තෙරක්, නොපෙනෙන ලොවක සඟවන ලදී. ත්‍රස්තවාදය පෝෂණය කළ බලවේග විසින්, ඒ බිහිසුණු ත්‍රස්තවාදයේ නියමුවා වන ප්‍රභාකරන් ව සලකන ලද්දේ කිසිවකුට මැඩළිය නොහැකි අද්භූත වූ සටන්කරුවෙකු ලෙසිනි.

An illustrious son of Sri Lanka, a patriot, a fearless defender of Buddhism and Sinhala culture at a time when they were despised as a result of foreign domination, since 1505 by the Portuguese, the Dutch and subsequently by the British under the influence of Catholicism/Christianity, Anagarika Dharmapala breathed his last on April 29, 1933, exactly 77 years ago today.

He was born on September 17, 1864 to the family of Mudliyar Don Carolis Hewavitharana of Hiththetiya in Matara and Mallika Dharmagunawardena of Matara. They named their son Don David. So he was Don David Hewavitharana.

Venerable Wariyapola Sumangala Thera, once the Anunayake of Asgiri Maha Vihare, is a forgotten national hero. His statue which stands at Maha Maluwa was popularly venerated in the past, especially when the late Mahanayake Pallipane Chandananda Thera was living.

On Tuesday, there was no one present at the statue to pay their respects, not even school children of Wariaypola Sri Sumangala School, which had been named after this brave monk who tore down the British flag at Bogambara in protest of the signing of the Kandyan Convention handing over the country to the English king. The principal of the school too was said to be out of the country.

The President was speaking at the opening of the maritime archaeological museum established at the Dutch warehouse in the Galle Fort Premises under the Galle Fort Conservation project which was funded by the Netherlands Government.

Sri Lanka is to officially appeal to a number of museums in several countries as well as private collectors to return cultural and religious artefacts and statues taken away from the country during the colonial period, Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said.

“Official requests will be made stressing the fact that Sri Lankans will be glad not only to see the remains of their heritage, but also to study the artefacts.” he said.
