The media reported recently that Sri Lanka’s Roman Catholic clergy is reacting in spontaneous protest against the Education Department’s history text books. It is however not clear which sections and paragraphs in these books the clergy is referring to.

If the books criticize the Catholic religion itself and carry derogatory remarks about Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary and the Bible there is no question that the books should be withdrawn since such criticism would be offensive to Catholics and Christians. But if the Catholic Church is objecting to references on the use of religion by European Colonialists as a Trojan horse to consolidate their power in the conquered territories that is an entirely different issue. It cannot and should not be swept under the carpet in the name of ‘religious harmony’ however unpalatable it may be to some.

Organizers of the Akon concert which was scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka last Saturday but later had to be cancelled, have begun refunding the cost of the tickets purchased, officials said adding that the rescheduled concert in the Maldives was also postponed.

“We have already begun refunding the tickets. Those who purchased tickets from Dialog and Cinnamon Grand Hotel will be refunded on Thursday 29th April,” an official at Platinum Entertainment told Daily Mirror online.

The Buddhist convert to Islam, Sara, alias Malani Perera who had written two books about her conversion from Buddhism to Islam and was in detention on the orders of the Defence Secretary from March 19  was released today on bail of Rs 5000 cash with two sureties for Rs 50,000 each  by the Colombo Additional Magistrate Mrs. Praharsha S. Ranasinghe .

She was arrested allegedly for publishing a book deemed to defamatory and offensive to  Buddhists. The Mirihana  Special Investigation Unit submitting a report in court submitted that the suspect was arrested on a complaint made by a courier service and on checking the suspect the police found that her identity card contained her name as Malani Perera and she was dressed like a Muslim. Consequently they arrested her conducted investigation after detaining her till April 19 at Mirihana Police Station on the orders of Defense Secretary.

LA HAYE, April 16, 2010 (AFP) : A Catholic priest in the Netherlands has come under investigation over allegations of child abuse and embezzlement in Sri Lanka, Church officials and the police said Friday.

The Rotterdam diocese said in a statement it had contacted the police and dismissed the priest.

Rotterdam police spokesman Karel van Horssen confirmed the Church notification and said the investigation was launched immediately.

"In July 2009, the diocese was informed of the priest's suspected sexual abuse and embezzlement in Sri Lanka," the diocese said.

COLOMBO : A Sri Lankan woman taken into custody last month for writing books about her conversion to Islam for Buddhism is being investigated for possible links to Islamic extremists, police said Saturday.

Last weekend, police said the woman, identified as Malini Perera, was taken into custody under tough emergency laws over allegations of "anti-state" activities but they did not elaborate.

But on Saturday, police spokesman Prashantha Jayakody said Perera was being held while police investigate "possible links to Islamic militants."

‘Discover Islam’ Organization officials of Bahrain have made requests to all International Human rights Organizations to intervene in the release of Sri Lankan born Sara Malini Perera (38) who is a resident of Bahrain, held in custody from 20th last month on allegations that she had written two books vilifying Buddhism and propagating Islam.

She had written these two books in Sinhala and published them to explain why she embraced Islam deserting the Buddhist faith.

Lawyers for the Muslim author arrested on charges of anti-state activities accuse Sri Lankan authorities of illegal arrest and detention.

Alex Fernando, counsel for Sarah Malani Perera, told BBC Sandeshaya that he is yet to be informed of the reasons for the arrest.

"She too has not been informed of any reasons for the arrest," he said.

Mrs. Perera, who converted from Buddhism to Islam, was forced to remove the face veil by the officers at Mirihana police station, he said.
