කොළඹ-ලංකාපුවත් : මුදල් සොයා මැද පෙරදිග වෙත යන බොහෝ ශ්‍රී ලාංකික කාන්තාවන් සේම මාතර තිහගොඩ පදිංචි එල්. පී. ආරියවතී මහත්මිය ද දහසක් බලාපොරොත්තු පොදි බැඳගෙන සෞදි අරාබිය වෙත ගෘහ සේවිකාවක් ලෙසින් යෑමට තීරණය කළේ තම දරුවන් තිදෙනාට දීප්තිමක් අනාගතයක් උදා කිරීම සඳහාය.

ඒ අනුව කොළඹ පිහිටි විදේශ රැකියා අයතනයක් මාර්ගයෙන් 2010 මාර්තු මාසයේදී ඇය සෞදි අරාබිය බලා පිටත්ව ගියේ එම අරමුණ සාර්ථක කරගැනීම උදෙසාය.

සෞදියේ රියාද් නුවර පිහිටි සුවිසල් නිවසක ගෘහ සේවිකාවක් ලෙසින් ඇයව සේවයට යොමු කළ අතර එහි නිවෙස් හිමියා, ඔහුගේ බිරිඳ හා දරුවන් පස් දෙනෙකු වාසය කළේය. එම නිවසේ රැකියාවට ගොස් මුල් දින කිහිපයේදී ගෙහිමියන් ආරියවතී මහත්මියට හොඳින් සැලකූවත් ටික කාලයක් ගතවන විට එම තත්වය වෙනස් විය.

The contemporary public perception about politicians in Sri Lanka is that getting into politics is an investment for their future, and not the future of the country they profess to serve. This cynicism seems well founded and well established, not for specific reasons of truism, but because very few politicians have demonstrated otherwise.

The other cynicism that prevails is that only the bad and the ugly get into politics, and the good either don’t or they have left for greener pastures. No doubt this is not universally true as we do get politicians who are honourable, credible and who think about the country before themselves. In saying this, some might say the writer has to pinch himself and wake up to reality! Some might say the writer is looking to add to his list of oxymorons.

Following the story under the caption “Residents Furious Over Bossy Monk” in the July 11 issue of The Sunday Leader, more revelations have surfaced as to how Ven. Pitaduwe Siri Dhamma Thero of the Siri Sadhaham Ashramaya in Bellantara (Dehiwala) continues to harass and disturb the lives of innocent people in and around the temple.

Allegations have been leveled against Pitiduwe Thero for using the names of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, his brothers Gotabaya and Basil Rajapaksa and their spouses in order to get all his unlawful work done through state departments and to frighten the neighbourhood into silence, preventing them from reacting against all his unauthorised work.

Colombo : The colorful Adi Vel procession conducted by Hindus, returned to the streets of Colombo after 16 years. This procession of Lord Muruka proceeded from Pettah and traveled through York Street, Achilon Square and Galle Road, stopping to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa in front of his residence at Temple Trees.

The procession was organized yesterday by the trustees of the Sammangod Sri Kathir Velautha Swami Temple and Manicavinayagak Temple.

On the last 18th, trustees and members of Sammangod Sri Kathir Velautha Swami Temple and Manicavinayagak Temple extended an invitation to President Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees to participate in the 2010 Adi Vel Festival.

Colombo : Many of the Chinese nationals working in Sri Lanka’s southern Hambanthota port project are Chinese convicts directly from its prisons, according to Japan Times. The reason is the prisons overcrowding dilemma that China is facing now, according to JT.

Most of the ‘convicts’ in Chinese prisons are forced into the jails simply due to the fact that they challenged various Chinese policies and practices by staying outspoken.

As part of its ‘strategy’ to overcome the 1.5 million massive prison populations problem, China is now 'exporting' its convicts as laborers at Chinese-run projects especially in the developing world, JT added.

As Sri Lanka’s Royal College celebrates the 175th anniversary of its founding this year on a grand scale of pomp and pageantry that perhaps no other school in the country can match, it is a moot question to ask whether there are alternate voices from within or outside Royal College, that have different views on how the grand old school should celebrate its anniversaries and success with the virtually unlimited resources it commands.

Parties on the streets may not be every student’s cup of tea in so far as celebration of school anniversaries or use of school resources is concerned, however plenty they may be. To be fair by Royal College it has not been without dissident voices even within its student ranks, who have grappled with moral conscience and spoken out in favour of others less privileged than the ‘elite’ students attending some Colombo based schools.

Colombo : Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa left yesterday for Ukraine on the invitation of President Victor Yanukovich of Ukraine. This will be the first Head of State visit from Sri Lanka to Ukraine.

Director of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's information policy department Oleh Voloshyn said that this visit would be the first in the history of Ukrainian-Sri Lankan relations, and that it would help promote a bilateral political dialogue at the summit level, further developing cooperation between the two countries in the fuel and energy, military and technical, education, and culture and humanitarian spheres.

Voloshyn also added that the two countries expect to expand their international treaty framework and strengthen the two countries' cooperation via international organizations.
