The
Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA)
has focused its attention on further improvement of the standard of
life of the people of the North. As one of the steps in this regard,
ICTA has organised a workshop and an exhibition at the the Jaffna
library this week.
ICTA said that this event will be conducted to disseminate information
on projects that will benefit especially farmers, women, children, small
scale entrepreneurs as well as differently abled persons.
The workshop will be held today (05.05.2010) and the exhibition will be
on tomorrow (06.05.2010). A special focus at this event will be creating
awareness of projects initiated by the e-Society programme of ICTA. ............................>>

Sri Lanka's Information and Communication
Technology Agency (ICTA) announced this week that the Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved the use
of Sinhala and Tamil language in website addresses, a move that ICTA
said "would go a long way in making Sri Lankans, especially the rural
folk, move speedily towards the ideals of world fellowship and global
village”.
To determine the true impact of this potential paradigm shift, the
Business Times spoke to local industry opinion leaders to ascertain how

The Criminal Investigations Division carried out yet another corporate
end user raid over the last two days when it raided a limited liability
company.
"The company is suspected to be infringing the intellectual property
rights of the Business Software Alliance members, namely Adobe, Autodesk
and Microsoft by using pirated and unlicensed software in the course of
running its business," the CID’s public relations agents announced. ............................>>

Lanka's police have raided a company suspected to be using pirated and
unlicensed software, the Business Software Alliance (BSA) which
represents software firms said.
The company is suspected to be infringing the intellectual property
rights of BSA members, Adobe, Autodesk and Microsoft, it said in a
statement.
The raids on Tuesday and Wednesday involved the seizure and examination
of over seventy computers installed with an estimated 120 copies of
pirated software valued at about 10 million rupees. .............................>>

domain ‘LK’ – Global

Soon
it will be possible to replace the top level internet domain ‘LK’ by
lanka or ilangai respectively in Sinhala or Tamil script in the Sihala /
Tamil web-site addresses.
This is because the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN has approved Sri Lanka’s request for the top level domains . The
approval was granted last Tuesday (23). Thus, for example, the Sinhala /
Tamil web-site address for the web-site of Sri Lanka parliament will be
web.parlimentuwa.lanka (accurately typed in Sihhala script) /
talam.paaraalumandram.ilankai (accurately typed in Tamil script). ............................>>

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered the
suspension of a plan by Sri Lanka’s telecommunications regulator to
censor anti-government websites by blocking access to it with Chinese
assistance, informed sources said.
This reversal of the decision by the Telecommunication Regulatory
Commission (TRC) follows last week’s Sunday Times front page report
which referred to measures to clamp down on anti government information
