Colombo : The colorful Adi Vel procession conducted by Hindus, returned to the streets of Colombo after 16 years. This procession of Lord Muruka proceeded from Pettah and traveled through York Street, Achilon Square and Galle Road, stopping to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa in front of his residence at Temple Trees.
The procession was organized yesterday by the trustees of the Sammangod Sri Kathir Velautha Swami Temple and Manicavinayagak Temple.
On the last 18th, trustees and members of Sammangod Sri Kathir Velautha Swami Temple and Manicavinayagak Temple extended an invitation to President Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees to participate in the 2010 Adi Vel Festival.
Chief Trustee Mr, A. Manickwasagar handed over the invitation to the President for the festival scheduled to be held on July 23, 2010. Trustees, Mr. R. Sivarama, Mr. R. Asokakumar and Mr. P. Sundaralingam were also present on that occasion.
The 160-year-old Adi Vel Hindu religious ceremony, which could not be held for the past sixteen years due to menace of terrorism resumed this year.
President has extended fullest cooperation and assured security for the Adi Vel festival, said Temple Trustee Ashok Kumar. He added that the Adi Vel procession will travel through many streets of Colombo staring from Pettah and travel through York Street, Achilon Square and Galle Road.
Enroute the procession, without any religious and ethnic discrimination, people participated and expressed their happiness and veneration to Lord Muruka.
